Know Your Purpose - Live Your Purpose TM

“Seek not the things that are too high for thee, and search not into things above thy ability: but the things that God hath commanded thee, think on them always, and in many of his works be not curious.”

Sirach 3:22, The Holy Bible, DRV

One of the many lies put forth by today’s counterfeit culture is that you can be anything you want; you just have to “claim it” and it will be yours.  The reason this is a lie is not only does it contradict the truth of the Word of God as expressed above, but it is perfectly unreasonable.  You can claim to want to be a professional athlete or a neurosurgeon but if you don’t have the ability you are wasting your time and maybe the entirety of your life pursuing something that was never intended to be yours.  The outtakes from American Idol all too well reveal how many people “Seek … the things that are too high … [and] things above thy ability”.

So, should we not have dreams?  Should we not aspire to greatness?  The answer is we should have dreams and we should respond to the call of greatness that naturally exists in each one of us.  The key though is to “Seek … the things that God hath commanded thee”.

Each human person is destined for greatness according to the unique combination of talents and gifts that have been given to them by God.  What the world and the counterfeit culture teaches is the self-made man, the “I did it my way” approach to achieving success and greatness.  From their youngest years, parents, grandparents, extended family, and others ask children - “what do you want to be when you grow up?”.  The real question that we should be teaching our children to ask is - “Lord, what do you want me to be when I grow up?”  This second question replaces the imperfect desire for what we think we want in life with the perfect Will of God and what He wants for our life.  This makes a profound difference in the joy, peace, and happiness you can experience throughout the course of your life.

By asking God what He wants you to do with the gifts and talents He has given you, you are enabled to live a more purposeful and meaningful life.  By allowing yourself to be conformed to the world’s definition of success, you place yourself in great jeopardy of thinking and acting contrary to the purpose and plan God has for you.  We all know people that seem stuck or are always searching for their place in the world.  By asking God to make His dreams, your dreams; and His plans, your plans, you are ensured that no matter what your path in life may be that it is what is best for you.  God can dream for you bigger and better than you can ever dream for yourself.
